Giorgio Gentili was undoubtedly one of the most influential musicians in early 18th-century Venice. By 1702, or perhaps even earlier, he was appointed maestro di instromenti at the prestigious Ospedale dei Mendicanti in Venice, an institution that also employed musicians such as Legrenzi, Biffi, and Galuppi. In 1689, Gentili joined the orchestra of San Marco as a violinist, and shortly thereafter, in 1691, he was appointed concertmaster of the orchestra. Under his direction, musicians such as Veracini, Giovanni Battista Vivaldi, and Antonio Vivaldi worked, the latter of whom was notably influenced by Gentili’s concertos.

The Capricci da camera a violino e violoncello o cimbalo were published in Venice by the renowned printer Giuseppe Sala in 1709. Today, copies of this edition are preserved in two libraries: the Musiksammlung der Grafen von Schönborn-Wiesentheid and the library of the Conservatorio di Musica Benedetto Marcello in Venice.
