In Copisteria del Conte is a project inspired by two quests: to rediscover music that is almost unknown to today’s ears and to evoke Genoa’s soundscape in the second half of the 1700s. The selected pieces come from Count Taccoli’s bustling music-copying workshop, weaving a connection between the compositions, their composers, and the city of Genoa.
This double album showcases a vibrant array of line-ups—from intimate string quartets to delicate trios for violin, cello, and psaltery— featuring luminaries like Boccherini alongside hidden gems such as Gallucci and Ferrari. Although crafted and recorded in the Netherlands, its heart beats in Genoa, led by the talented Genoa-born cellist Jacopo Ristori. The project also showcases the artistry of Nevio Zanardi, a Genoese painter and musician who created an evocative painting inspired by the music, the Count’s character, and the noble coat of arms of his family.
The booklet includes an essay by Professor Carmela Bongiovanni and a link through which the listener can access more content, such as a conversation with Professor Davide Mingozzi, which helps to appreciate the relevance of this repertoire.

The Sound
The recordings on this CD were made with a proprietary microphone technique, called ECA, that was developed by our sound engineer in order to achieve maximum sound fidelity, with very good positioning of the instruments in the virtual space that is being created between your speakers. The mixing and mastering process has been performed with an almost fully analog equipment chain in order to maintain the complex tonal character of the sound of the instruments. This results in a musical vividness and three-dimensional sound that is rarely heard in acoustic music recordings.

It is a colourful bouquet, just as colourful as Taccoli (but much more pleasant). Ristori has brought together a highly qualified team of colleagues, some young, and early in their career, others with a vast experience in the world of early music. This has resulted in a compelling programme, which is performed at the highest possible standard. Cello aficionados obviously should not miss this set of discs, but I urge anyone interested in music from this period to investigate this production. It is an ear-opener, and I am sure that he/she will regularly return to it. This is musical entertainment as one would wish to hear more often.

Het ensemble bestaat uit zowel gevestigde namen als jonge, veelbelovende musici. Antoinette Lohmann, Sara de Vries, Viola de Hoog, Jesse Solway en theorbespeler Earl Christy vormen, samen met Ristori, een homogeen geheel. De uitvoeringen getuigen van historische kennis én artistieke flair. De articulatie is genuanceerd, de frasering sprankelend, en de opnamekwaliteit is helder en ruimtelijk. Bijzonder is ook dat elk werk met liefde wordt benaderd, hoe obscuur de componist ook moge zijn.
Dit project overstijgt het louter muzikale: het is een kleine culturele archeologie die inzicht biedt in de muzikale praktijken van achttiende-eeuws Italië — een periode die vaak overschaduwd wordt door de grootheden uit de barok en de romantiek. Tegelijk is het een ode aan de niet-professionele muziekliefhebbers van toen, die met toewijding en passie muziek speelden in salons en privé-kringen.
Met In copisteria del Conte bewijst Ristori dat muzikale archeologie niet stoffig hoeft te zijn. Integendeel: het is springlevend, verrassend en bovenal verrijkend. Dit is een album dat de nieuwsgierigheid wekt, het oor verwent en uitnodigt tot herbeluistering. Een echte aanrader voor liefhebbers van het galante tijdperk, cellomuziek en muzikale ontdekkingsreizen.
