Vivaldi – Violin Concerto in A major “per Pisendel” or “Per li Coglioni” RV 340 (PDF)
The autograph score contained in the Mus. 2389-O-43 is the only known source of the Vivaldi concerto RV 340. The manuscript is part of the scores that Pisendel took with him to Dresden after his Italian journey of the years 1716 and 1717 and it is part of the Schrank II collection.
The manuscript presents a number of annotations and additions. Vivaldi added a cadenza at the end of the manuscript and it is possible to find the sketch the aria “Vivat in pace et pax regnet” from “Juditha triumphans” RV 644.
In addition, it is possible to find several embellished passages by Pisendel. The second movement is especially interesting due to its rich ornamentation. The third movement features a passage with an alternative version by Pisendel.
Other annotations include the famous sentence “Per li Coglione” [For Blockheads] added by Vivaldi and referring to the numbers of the continuo.
All these additions and modifications have been added to the present edition of the Vivaldi concerto RV 340 “per Pisendel” or “Per li Coglioni” 😀
